AI-ready software is not simply an application with a chat box. For people, automations or agents to interact with operations, the data, actions, permissions and outcomes must be modeled explicitly. APIs and the Model Context Protocol can provide access; they do not replace that foundation.
Define domain tools first
An agent should not execute arbitrary database operations. The system exposes bounded tools such as find order, create draft, explain status or request approval. Every tool has validated inputs, documented output and understandable failure behavior.
Separate read and write actions. Mutating or irreversible operations require tighter authorization, idempotency and often explicit human confirmation.
Respect the system of record
An integration must know which system owns a customer, order, price or status. Agents should not silently merge conflicting sources based on their own plausibility. Uncertainty becomes visible and moves to an accountable person.
Authorize every action
MCP standardizes exchange of context and tools; it is not a complete security model for a business process. The MCP specification defines protocol and roles, while identity, tenant isolation, domain authorization and approval remain architectural responsibilities.
OWASP recommends server-side authorization on every request and least privilege. An agent therefore does not automatically receive every right of the user whose channel it occupies.
Build observability and reversal
Record which tool ran for which authorized purpose without copying unnecessary personal or confidential content into logs. Changes need a correlation ID, outcome and, where possible, a domain-level reversal.
Treat AI readiness as a product property
A sound operational application has stable APIs, explicit state, documented rules, exports and events. These properties help even without AI by making integration, testing and accountability stronger.
MCP or an agent interface then becomes a controlled adapter. The core remains useful when models, providers or protocols change. AI-ready does not mean maximum autonomy; it means automation can connect to clean business logic safely, measurably and replaceably.
